South Harbour’s need has been to have a website put together that could reflect the particular culture of a business that has grown despite a bunch of adversity in its 8-year history - and to illustrate a business that has its own unique story to tell.

We personally have an aversion to websites that set out to do ‘a snow job’ -  websites with perfect products, a perfect past, managed by perfect people, with a perfect future . . . if you will just buy their products.

Our www needed to convey our past more than anything really, and this to existing customers and equally to our personnel and their families who take such a pride in the operation.

And then also importantly to existing suppliers of the business.

The tone of the site needed to be one of ‘realism’ tainted with some ‘dry humour’ perhaps.

To get the web construction under way the arrangement with Ross was : we send ‘raw material’ (photographs, text etc.) through, as and when we find it, or have time to compile it; and we give Ross notes on what we think may work.

He then sees what is technically possible; communicates with our service provider on the technical stuff, and does stuff like enhancing the marginally good photographs we may have -  some of these now look 200% better than the originals - and then puts up drafts of pages with filters, wallpaper etc. for us to comment on.

We have been pleasantly surprised with Bart Websites treatment of the material.

So this is a fun and creative process altogether for all of us and have awakened a sense of history in all us at the company.

Problem is with our fast-paced lives is we are all intensely tied up in a ‘sterile present’ and fast forget how we got there.

But the end result we have from Ross is a varied website – a cross between a photograph exhibition and museum and a library – but it comes over as being orderly and organised, which we like.

We are probably around 50% done at this stage , and are not pressured to do the rest – bearing in mind our former website was extremely dull and failed to capture what we were all about in any great measure.

Ross has been there for us and it is good to know we can add to the website as and when we need to.

And we know he will ring the changes faster the next edition of The Cape Times.
